Marijuana

Anybody who has seen popular music videos and TV programs will quickly realize that marijuana is one of the most commonly used drugs apart from alcohol and cigarettes. Known as “weed”, “chronic”, “pot” and other aliases, marijuana is usually smoked as a cigarette or in a pipe or bong. When smoked the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, is released through the lungs and into the bloodstream reaching the brain to induce the high.

It is this high that many marijuana users become addicted to and repeatedly use the drug to feel. The drug affects the pleasure center of the brain and also distorts coordination and the senses. People under the influence of marijuana can have a difficult time concentrating and keeping track of time. The long term effects on the brain can include difficulties with thinking and solving problems and memory problems.

The most damaging effects of marijuana however can be social and psychological. Isolation from friends and family can be common if the pot smoker is trying to keep usage a secret. Marijuana users miss more days of work than non-drug users and can have symptoms of depression. Far from the party drug marijuana can suck the life out of the user and take away the motivation to change and grow.
